Retailers hoping to capitalise on the Olympic games should
be careful how they market their allegiance.
The Games organisers are strictly enforcing shopkeers to ban any direct reference of the eponymous 5-ring-logo, in a bid to keep their sponsors happy.
Several retailers have been told by trading standards officials that colourful rings put up in a window constituted an ‘unauthorised use’ of the Olympic logo that stands the risk of being sued. Other retailers have found themselves raided by ‘community wardens’ from the council. Councils will declare even a light-hearted window display ‘unauthorised’, with also a risk of being taken to court.
One menswear retailer in Surbiton, South-West London, has so far managed to stay clear of authorities. The company produced a range of clothes with squares rather than rings in the Olympic colours. And written above them is an interesting spelling of London 2012 Olympics - it has been changed to Lodnon 2102 Oimplycs.
